Occupational Therapist Specialist

Completes all principle responsibilities of an occupational therapist. Successfully achieves a voluntary advanced level of specialized knowledge which builds on a broad base of professional education and practice to develop a greater depth of knowledge and skills related to a particular area of clinical practice.

Examples include achieving certification in hand therapy, or achieving certification in lymphedema therapy.

Other certifications will be considered as appropriate. Assists the department lead/director in identifying and researching possible program expansion to improve patient care and assist in department growth and differentiation.

At least annually, markets specialty knowledge to physicians, peers, other health care professionals or public groups. Maintains certification/specialization through personal and self guided efforts.


Is the expert in his/her specialty field and provides direction, guidance and leadership with the goal of excellence in patient care.

Experience:



Requires the greater of three years of professional experience in the field of Occupational Therapy or the requirements as defined by the certification board.

Education:

Requires a degree in Occupational Therapy from an accredited college/university program plus the completion of a curriculum that provides foundation for certification of advanced knowledge and skills.

Licensure/Certification:

Must have a current license/permit as a Occupational Therapist in Nebraska or Iowa, License must be held in the state you provide services. BLS or BLS instructor certification is required upon hire. Acceptable credentialing bodies and certifications include the following: American Red Cross: CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, American Safety and Health Institute: CPR, PRO, must say Professional Level-with AED, and American Heart Association: Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Must possess a strong knowledge base of occupational therapy; strong knowledge of applicable laws, regulations, guidelines and professional standards; strong communication skills; must demonstrate personal traits of high level of motivation, team orientation, professionalism, trust and place a high value on treating others with dignity and respect. Must have strong organizational and marketing skills to participate in research, consultation, teaching, scholarly/professional activities, education, or marketing to interested health care professionals and community groups.
